A rubber or bushing is a particular kind of vibration isolator. It serves as a connection point between two components, reducing the energy passed via the bushing.

A rubber bushing (or more frequently synthetic rubber or polyurethane) is used frequently in automobile suspension systems to separate the faces of two metal objects while permitting some movement.

When passing over a big bump, for instance, this movement enables the suspension components to move freely while reducing noise and minor vibrations that are transmitted to the vehicle’s chassis. Another name for a rubber bushing is a flexible mounting or an antivibration mounting.

These bushings frequently assume the shape of a flexible annular cylinder enclosed in a metallic casing or outer tube. Additionally, they may have an interior crush tube to prevent the bushing from being crushed by the fasteners holding it to the threaded spigot. There are numerous varieties of bushing designs.

The relative motion between the two connected pieces is accommodated by strain in the rubber rather than shear or friction at the interface, which is a significant distinction from plain bearings. The D block for a sway bar is one example of a rubber bushing that does permit sliding at the point where one part meets the rubber.
