With that in mind, we asked two industry experts to anticipate all of your most pressing granite inquiries, so you can feel confident about making the purchase.
What is Granite?
“True granite is a type of igneous rock that is mostly formed of the minerals quartz and feldspar,” explains Henry Hernandez of Builders Surplus. This combination of elements gives granite its distinctive speckled appearance, as well as a variety of finishes ranging from creamy white to deep black to speckled gray and even bright blue and salmon-y pink.
Granite is a coarse-grained (phaneritic) intrusive igneous rock that is mostly made of quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase. It is formed by magma with a high silica and alkali metal oxide concentration that progressively cools and solidifies underground. It is common in the Earth’s continental crust, where it can be found in igneous intrusions. These range in size from a few millimeters wide dikes to batholiths exposed over hundreds of square kilometers.
Granite is representative of a larger family of granitic rocks known as granitoids, which are mostly made of coarse-grained quartz and feldspars in different proportions. The relative ratios of quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase (the QAPF classification) are used to classify these rocks, with real granite representing granitic rocks rich in quartz and alkali feldspar. Most granitic rocks also have mica or amphibole minerals, however a handful (known as leucogranites) have essentially no dark minerals.
Granite is almost always enormous (no internal structures), hard, and tough. Because of these qualities, granite has been used as a building stone throughout history.
