Backer rods are flexible thick foam which are usually rod used as a cover or backing in joints, cracks and edges to lessen and control the amount of sealant to be used.
Backer rods are often rounded, bendable lengths of foam that are placed in joints or cracks as a “backing” to help manage the quantity of sealant/caulking used and establish a back stop. There are numerous sizes and diameters available for the best match to the size of the joint being sealed. The range of foam cell structure types, including closed cell, open cell, and bi-cellular, is another significant characteristic in addition to shape. It’s crucial to realize that cell structure has a significant role in irregular joint application, desired joint flexibility, and sealant application. Backer rod material is constructed of polyethylene or polyurethane foam, which makes it compatible with caulking or joint sealants used in everyday industrial applications.
Backer rods are can be mainly seen in construction of precast concrete walls between the two or installation of glass panels beside the concrete walls.
It has variety of sizes and thickness to be used in different scenarios and situations.
Backer rods are not thought of as being a key part of a construction, but they do contribute to the “hourglass” profile of the sealant and the avoidance of the damaging 3-sided adhesion for moving joints. The backer rod is necessary if bubbling issues are crucial to a project.
The Four Main Advantages of Backer Rod are:
The joint sealant’s flexibility should be increased.
Controlling sealant depth can help you use less caulk by preventing overuse of either material.
For a stronger bond, press adhesive firmly against the joint’s sides to form an hourglass shape.
Make a “bond-breaker” that makes it simple to clear out the joint and refill it as necessary over time.
