Rectangular tubing is commonly used for structural and maintenance applications. When opposed to angles or channels, its box-shape construction provides significantly more strength and stiffness. ASTM A500 is used to classify carbon square and rectangular materials (mill generated), with a yield point (psi) of 39,000 for Grade A and 46,000 for Grade B. Square and rectangular tubing is also known as HSS (hollow structural steel).
A coil is shaped into a rectangular tube and then passed through a succession of dies. To construct its shape, it is welded from the inside out.
