An ordinary rigging tool called a turnbuckle is used to change the tension and lessen slack in a rope, cable, or other tensioning system.
Turnbuckles are a broad category of products with a wide range of uses in numerous sectors. They can be used in applications as simple as providing tension in a fence or perimeter cable, or something as complicated as the construction of a suspension bridge.
What is the Main Use of Turnbuckle?
A turnbuckle is a piece of hardware used to tighten or loosen a rope, cable, or other system of tensioning.
A turnbuckle is described as “an adjustable device consisting of three major components: a body, a right-hand threaded end fitting, and a left-hand threaded end fitting” in ASME B30.26 – Rigging Hardware.
The tensioning system and/or a securement point are connected via the end fitting on either side of a turnbuckle. The cable or rope to which the turnbuckle is attached is then tightened or loosened to regulate tension and remove slack.
To provide length to the assembly, a turnbuckle may be used alone or in combination with additional turnbuckles.
Types of Turnbuckles
Turnbuckle kinds are generally referred to by the set of end fittings that the device uses. The following end fitting combos are the most typical:
- Jaw and jaw
- Eye and jaw
- Eye and eye
- Hook and hook
- Hook and eye
An eye and eye turnbuckle, as you would have guessed, has an eye end fitting on either end. A hook end fitting is present on one end and an eye end fitting is present on the other of a hook and eye turnbuckle.
What the turnbuckles must connect to and whether the solution is permanent or temporary determine the end fitting combination.
Temporary connection points that may be regularly linked and disconnected are attached to using hooks. When connecting to a connection point that cannot be opened, such as an eye bolt or link, a jaw is employed. When connecting to an opening connection point, such as a shackle or fast link, an eye is utilized.
